The Civil War makes me sad.
…I’m re-reading my favorite parts of Killer Angels.
Plus music from Ken Burn’s documentary just started playing on pandora.
Sigh.
Such a history nerd.
This is Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.
He was a badass at Gettysburg.
He is my favorite :)
WAIT CRYING HE WAS MY FAVORITE.
The English chair at Bowdoin College (a position previously held by Professor Calvin Stowe, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s husband), born Lawrence Joshua but changed his name to Joshua Lawrence, Enlists in 1862 as Colonel of the 20th Maine but by 1865 is promoted to Major General, leads the bayonet charge at Little Round Top at the battle of Gettysburg and there is wounded in the bladder (the injury will ultimately contribute to his demise), present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, and after the war awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for “gallantry at Gettysburg.” :)

BLAOBLAOBLAO
You know that feeling that you get when something unexpected happens? You’re speechless. Stunned. Short of breath. If you didn’t believe in a higher power, you might be headed to the nearest church to pick up a pamphlet. That’s how I felt when I saw this picture submitted to LOLadelphia by reader Jim.
Philadelphia is a city that sucks at grammar and sucks at spelling. It’s almost embarrassing to live in a city where either no one proof-reads, or people don’t care enough to see if something reads well. Pictured here is a spray-painted notice that this area of Northeast Philadelphia is a “video survaiilance area.” Normally, in our fair city, people would pass by this and likely not think twice. One eagle-eyed Philadelphian took some initiative and corrected the spelling of “survailance” to the correct “surveillance.” Then, he/she added a little something extra at the end for a little extra “Phillytude.”
The fact this was corrected at all gives me hope for this city, that there are people out there out to correct the grammatical and spelling missteps that many in Philly choose to tolerate. Good thing I was sitting down for this. Thanks, Jim!
